Today's rain will add to the nearly inch of rain downtown Los Angeles received Thursday. Only 0.34 of an inch of rain fell during the entire month of January. Typically, the city welcomes 3.33 inches.
There will, however, be some negative aspects to this rain event. Flash flooding and mudslides could result as the rain through Saturday falls onto a soil saturated from Thursday's rain.
These threats will be greatest, but not limited to, areas recently burned by wildfires and along the southern slopes of the Southern California mountains.
Enough cold air will be in place for precipitation to come down as heavy snow in the mountains. Ski resorts in the southern Sierra and the mountains north and east of Los Angeles will welcome a fresh 1 to 2 feet of snow through Saturday.
Accumulating snow tonight into Saturday will make travel treacherous through the Grapevine of Interstate 5. Snow will even mix with rain in parts of Interstate 15's Cajon Pass.
